The Benefits of Open Hypermedia Systems Using Advanced Database Concepts

چکیده
Large engineering enterprises are just one application area of open hypermedia systems (OHS), which are characterized by both, open hyperbase and link server functionality. An open hyperbase allows besides others to store and retrieve an extensible set of hypermedia objects. A link server allows to store and retrieve connectivity information and supports consistency management thereof. To provide these functionalities, open hypermedia systems have to tackle several important issues such as interoperability, extensibility, and computation. Using advanced database concepts as OHS baseline architecture these issues can be elegantly resolved. In particular, this paper proposes an OHS architecture based on an active object-oriented database system as well as SGML/HyTime as standardized interchange formats. By using active object-oriented database systems extensibility and computation including consistency management are ensured. By using international standards interoperability of hypermedia information systems is reached. The proof-of-concept prototype TriGSSGML based on the commercial object-oriented database system GemStone and its active extension TriGS is currently under development. 1. This paper discusses some of the benefits from using an open hypermedia system to deliver the diverse range of information found within the manufacturing environment. The open hypermedia approach to information management and delivery allows a single multimedia resource base to be used for a range of applications, and permits a user to have controlled access to the required information, in an e...

Problem of knowledge analysis for decision support system is the most difficult task of information systems. This paper presents a new approach based on notions of mathematical theory of Rough Sets to solve this problem. Using these concepts a systematic approach has been developed to reduce the size of decision database and extract reduced rules set from vague and uncertain data. The method ha...
متن کاملMultilevel security for information retrieval systems - II
In this paper we describe multilevel security issues for hypermedia-based information retrieval database management systems. We first summarize the discussion in our earlier paper on the use of object-oriented approach for developing secure information retrieval systems and then discuss in detail how such a system can be augmented by a Linker to provide hypermedia database management system cap...
متن کاملTowards a Reference Architecture for Open Hypermedia
The OHS Working Group formed out of the 2nd Workshop on Open Hypermedia Systems at Hypertext '96 in Washington, DC (March 1996). The initial goals of the OHS Working Group were to define open hypermedia systems and to define open link services. The OHS Working Group meeting in Southampton, England (December 1996) showed that it is difficult to discuss scenarios and especially protocols [Davis e...
